School Improvement

Centennial Elementary School is located in the little town of Scio, in Oregon's beautiful Willamette Valley.

With small class sizes and passionate teachers, we strive to give every child the excellent education they need to succeed in a complex world.

Scio is a community of people who value family. We have a rich history of logging and farming, and a growing number of young professionals eager to connect with the values of small schools and a small town.

Making the Grade

Picture
Here is a summary of our grading policy.  It might be a little different than what you grew up with, but we've learned that this system helps kids learn.
  • Errors will be clearly marked on assignments, but teachers put simple comments to represent performance, instead of grades.
  • The school is using a 4-Level Grading Scale instead of percent correct when we grade. Scores are not based on percent correct, but on the description of student performance.
  • Assignment scores still average, but based on the level of performance, not the percent correct.

Man on Campus

Twice a year we invite the men of our community to take part of their day to be in the classroom.  Kids love it. Dads, uncles, grandpas, and other positive men are welcome.  Expect to help with classroom work, be a crossing guard, and have lunch if you can.  We sometimes get a lot of men in one class, so flexibility is wonderful. Teachers look forward to the help. Background checks are mandatory, and you'll need at least a week to make sure they go through.

Parent Academy

Several times each year Centennial parents gather in the library to hear from the principal or a guest speaker.  This year’s topics were Common Core Math and Getting Ahead This Summer.  We provide childcare so parents can enjoy uninterrupted time to gather new ideas and share their experiences.  Please keep your eyes open for announcements about time and place.

Contest of Awesome

Three times a year our school has a Contest of Awesomeness.  For two weeks, kids must get all their work complete and keep from getting a blue slip or a white slip.  Teachers help them set goals and give encouragement and feedback to support their efforts.  Those kids who “stay awesome” are invited to the Awesome Party.  We play games, have snacks, and get extended recess.  Students who don’t make it still get to come for their regular recess as well.

My Voice Student Survey

Each year, students are given the opportunity to tell the staff how we're doing.  We have found that student input is some of the most accurate and important information we gather about our school's success.
